Rokka no Yuusha : First Look

Hello everyone! First of all I'd like to thank you all for the support, 'cause as of this moment I've hit 400 views! (It might not seem that much but it's a big thing for me) And to celebrate we'll be looking at the pilot episodes of this seasons new anime! I hope you'll continue to check my blog for the latest reviews <3

For starters, a first look at Rokka no Yuusha. Synopsis: In a land where every hundreds of years the Demon King awakens and Fiends terrorize the people, six heroes are chosen by the Goddess of Fate to defeat the Demon King and save the world from its doom.
  • Good vs Evil Storyline
It might seem cliche but it's actually been a long time since an anime with this type of story have a lot of potential. Seriously, I'm mostly a fan of the romance genre, but I do know that since Akame Ga Kill and Nanatsu no Taizai there's been  a distinct lack of Action-GoodVSEvil-Anime (tell me of anime I might
have missed) and thus Rokka no Yuusha steps up
to fill in the gap.
  • Dynamic (Kick Ass) Fight Scenes
A very important factor in Action genre anime is, of course, the Action. Well animated fight scenes can instantly draw people to like an anime (unlike fight scenes where shounen MCs just hack and slash through monsters), and the first fight scene shown in the pilot episode KICKED ASS. The camera angles were so dynamic it felt like you were standing in the middle of the fight, amidst the beautiful chaos, I hope the anime continues to provide such thrilling action to the rest of the series.

  • Art and 3D Demons
The art for the characters are beautifully drawn and animated, yes, but what catches my eye is the use of 3D animation for the Demons/Fiends. It can either turn out to be good, or really really bad depending on how well they mix the 2D characters and 3D monsters in fight scenes. So far, they're pulling it off ( the only anime I could think of who did the same was Letter Bee) and it's definitely a unique characteristic of Rokka no Yuusha.

Overall, Rokka no Yuusha is definitely one of the better anime releases this season, with other anime like Charlotte / Gangsta / ''Others I haven't looked into yet'' to look out for. The first three episodes released are almost a guarantee that Rokka no Yuusha, as an anime, won't disappoint.

Comments are appreciated :))

AnoHana: The Flower We Saw that Day

It's about DAMN TIME I did a review on AnoHana. To tell you the truth it isn't really one of my favorites because dead/dying heroines aren't my thing (it's not a spoiler, chill, the main heroine is a spirit from the very start) but the anime managed to provide a very satisfactory and touching ending to one awesome Romance Drama anime.

Synopsis: A group of six childhood friends get emotionally distraught and separated after one of them , a girl named Menma, dies in an accident. Jinta, being the closest to Menma, can suddenly see Menma's ghost a few years later when Jinta's life reaches it's lowest since she died. Menma's final wish must be granted for her to rest peacefully, and in order to grant that wish all of them must reconcile and work together.

From now on I'll be doing a "3 Reasons" format, as in 3 Reasons to watch this anime! It makes for an easier read for those who cut to the chase and don't want to bother reading MY VERY BORING INTROS (I'm sorry). If you have comments about the new format please tell me below. So let's get started?

1)  It's 100% Pure Romance Drama.
Yes Sir. It doesn't have Fanservice (rather it doesn't NEED Fanservice), and has only moderate amounts of Comedy. AnoHana is true to itself; its aim is to touch the viewers' hearts, and it does so without relying on Fanservice to draw attention or heavy Comedy to sidetrack the drama. The only thing you should focus on when you watch this anime is the relationships and interactions of its characters and drama build-up of its main storyline; nothing unnecessary and unrelated to the plot.

2) Real Life Friendship - Relationship Theme
Nope, it's not one of those shounen manga that go "I have to protect my friends!"~ This is the real deal. Anime that people can relate to regarding real life relationships with friends are guaranteed to be good. AnoHana focuses on the concept that bonds formed by strong friendship may weaken over time, but it is never, ever broken --- it appeals to the viewers on how they feel about the bonds they have with other people at the moment, and admire the anime on nailing the concept of real, close friendship.

3) Unique. Characters. Love Pentagon. 'Nuff Said.
That's right! You heard me. Unique Characters meaning each of them has a beautifully written backstory, and their personalities have little to no stereotypical traits. They develop their character over time as the plot progresses and endears the reader, lulling them to watch more of the anime. What's more is have you seen a romance drama where 5 main characters form an actual Love Pentagon??!!! Not only that, there are Love Triangles INSIDE the Love Pentagon; and I'll remind you this IS NOT A CHEESY ROMCOM but rather a VERY VERY SERIOUS ROMANCE DRAMA. Must watch for the romance genre fans.

Regarding the genre and theme you may notice a strong similarity to NagiAsu (Friendship? Romance? Drama?) as many have, and I assure you AnoHana is just as good: meaning VERY GOOD.

But hey, I'll leave you to decide for yourself.

Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront)

THIS. It's one of those Anime that uses different perspectives and small short stories to build up its setting and develop the unique characters that dwell in it. IN SHORT IT'S AWESOME AND YOU SHOULD WATCH IT. Okay, synopsis first:

Hell Salem's Lot, once called New York City, is a city where humans and otherworldly creatures coexist; a rift connecting it to another dimension opens up trapping humans and entities from it in a barrier. What comes with the city's peculiar situation is everyday crime enticed with madness and magic, and now someone wants to destroy the barrier to unleash the city's horrors, and only a team of special humans can stop them.

So even after ripping off some synopses from other sites, it's still confusing but here's the catch: if you like anime like Baccano, or Durarara this anime has the same sort of feel. Using short stories from different characters' perspectives builds up the setting, Hellsalem's lot, while providing progress of the main plot and development of each unique character.

The anime provides distinct personalities for each and every character, with intriguing backstories relevant to the main storyline. Having each story center around different characters' perspectives makes you see more of Hell Salem's lot while familiarizing yourself with every person involved. It also shows how they interact with other characters and the madness/crazy vibe of the city itself.

The protagonists are members of 'Libra' (symbolizing a scale, balance), a secret organization fighting crime in the shadows, maintaining order in the city, and preventing it from falling into chaos. Leonardo Watch, hoping to find a cure for his sister's blindness, comes to the city and joins Libra. In the anime, he's the closest person you could call a 'main character', as his power is essential to penetrating the bubble wrapped around the city. He lacks fighting abilities making him lackluster in action scenes, but is involved in the major plot points of the story.

I'm expecting a lot from the season finale (june 11 or 12) which is in 5 days, because they took 2 weeks to plan it and apparently they "can't fit it in a 30-minute episode". Kekkai Sensen is a great anime, and I wholly recommend everyone to watch it.

P.S. The OP and ED song is also certainly one of the best summer

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru

Or also known as Oregairu / My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, (let's just use Oregairu since it's the shortest) Oregairu is NOT the Romantic Comedy you're expecting it to be. The anime has a school setting and revolves around a male protagonist, Hikigaya Hachiman, an introvert who can't form friends but isn't the least bothered by it. Everyday is a boring / normal day for Hikigaya until a teacher looking out for him puts him in a Club that takes takes random requests for assistance, the Volunteer Service club, only having one other member at the moment: the school's "prettiest girl", Yukinoshita Yukino.

The synopsis makes it look like your everyday Romance Comedy series right? Wrong! What makes Oregairu so interesting is the School Life - problems aspect, and the First Person point-of-view (remember the Haruhi Suzumiya series? Partly what made the show a lot more interesting was Kyon's POV) and it's refreshing to know what an antisocial teenager (who thinks there's nothing wrong with his way of life) thinks about the everyday school problems and adolescent mishaps he encounters while working for said club. He has some rather enthralling insights about relationships and adolescent life guaranteed to make you think about.
I'd say the first season focuses more on the drama, comedy, adolescent slice-of-life genre, and later in the second season develops into a full blown Romantic Drama --- as our main character struggles to solve everyone's complications while finding an answer to his own.

The anime seems to contain harem elements (3 or more girls interested in the protagonist) but it really revolves around the people in the club, 2 main heroines, as love interests. What I love about this anime is although it may be in Hikigaya's Point of View, almost all of the characters are given developments and very interesting personalities and backstories, without the plot getting to sidetracked; a quality everyone loves in anime. Oregairu is a must watch, for anime fans, introverts, teenagers, or simply everyone who's going through or just went through a really troublesome time as a student.

Plastic Memories: I hope one day, you'll be reunited

Let this first sentence be a warning that there will be SPOILERS in this post. It's a last episode review, containing thoughts about what I think of the way they directed the ending. So let's get started shall we?
Damn You Tsukasa!

The last 3 episodes pretty much showed us the memories Tsukasa and Isla are making together, and how they're having the most fun before the retrieval. Episode 11 and 12's endings showed us that they love each other truly, and feel pain for having to succumb to fate and be separated when the time comes.

First thing to say about the last episode: KINSHIP BATH SCENE? TSUKASA YOU LUCKY ****** nah just kidding (yahright) anything to see the two be happy. Kazuki dismisses Isla and Tsukasa on the morning of their last day of work as to make their most out of their remaining time; so not surprisingly, they go to the amusement park.

They have fun during the day, while the audience enjoys the last pieces of moe-ness and kawaii Isla has to offer. There was a certain scene I like where as the sun starts to set and Isla set off to see something Tsukasa notices how his shadow is alone and realized that's how it would stay when Isla leaves. This puts an air of drama on the viewers just before they begin the last half of the episode.

And the last half is when their final scene together comes.

With the amusement park closing and Isla's deadline looming before them, Isla invites Tsukasa to ride the Ferris Wheel last. The scene was very very quiet and peaceful: only Tsukasa and Isla's voices and a hum of the Ferris Wheel's movement can be heard. Tsukasa was visibly sad since the "alone shadow" scene, and for the first few minutes Isla talks about her thoughts about Tsukasa's future, like probably still working for Terminal Service, it being shut down to cut costs, and ending in this:
Tsukasa cringes, and Isla apologizes to Tsukasa. She then invites Tsukasa to do a simple game; she tells Tsukasa something she loves about him, Tsukasa tells what she loves about her, and they do it alternating until Isla says, " The way you hold back your tears despite your pain, and try so hard to smile" and "the way that smile is so wonderful" where she drops the bomb.

 ...
"Tsukasa, I had a good life."
...
"Hey, Tsukasa, I was so very happy"

"And now it's almost time for this dream to end."
...
"This is where I want it to end. Before the Ferris wheel goes all the way round"

Tsukasa starts to shed tears. Isla notes that this is the first time she's seen him cry, making even us viewers realize the pain Tsukasa's holding every second until they part ways. Isla wipes away his tears. She thanks Tsukasa for crying for her. Signifying that he loves her truly from the bottom of his heart, and that it pains him so much to see her leave. She pinches Tsukasa's cheeks and turn his lips into a smile. The smile of the person she has always cherished. She smiles back. Tsukasa, having felt how Isla was really happy to have lived this life, smiled too.

The Giftia Retrieval Process starts.

I love how the retrieval involves a ring that both the Retriever and the Giftia wears. The anime displayed it since episode 1 when Isla and Tsukasa first retrieve a Giftia, and it's been forever a set up for Tsukasa and Isla's final scene to look like a marriage. A wedding may be the happiest moment for a couple, but for them it's the saddest; nonetheless marriage symbolizes a love eternal, everlasting.

They hold hands and share a first and final kiss.

Kazuki was waiting outside to receive them, grieving the only word to describe her, as Tsukasa carries Isla towards her. She tells him that Isla looks so peaceful, and that he did a good job. Tsukasa, although trying hard to remain smiling, breaks down in tears. A letter she leaves to everyone thanks them for being such wonderful, kindhearted people she had made memories with.

I'm not really a fan of dying heroines anime, but some of those anime just turn out to be so good: Angel Beats and AnoHana to mention. Others, not so good: Guilty Crown, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, RosarioxVampire. I think it's in the way you handle the heroine's ending and a set epilogue to see how the hero ends up after losing his loved one. In this case, Plastic Memories ends with an epilogue where after 8/9 months of training, he comes back to work at Terminal Service. He is introduced to a new partner who appear to have the legs of someone short, and the hands smaller than Tsukasa's, implying that it could be Isla's Giftia model. The epilogue lets you, the viewer, decide on what the ending should be: If you think Tsukasa and Isla being reunited although already with lost memories would make them both happier, then its Isla. But if you think Tsukasa would only get hurt every single work day if his partner is a reformatted Isla with no recollection of him, then it's another character, someone who's not Isla, so he can move on and be happy with only his memories of her.

Overall, the anime played the series perfectly: reading some opinions of other bloggers here and there, some people said that the other Giftias weren't given a story and development and would therefore eliminate the need for them to be Giftias. I say making a Giftia-producing company that doesn't use Giftias to aid employees doesn't seem sensible, so it's just about the setting. Another opinion would be that Plastic Memories is almost a pure Romance story where it focuses on the emotions of the 2 main characters: any character development between the side characters would not only deviate the story from its genre, but would also make the anime unnecessarily lengthy and confusing. The anime already gave Michiru enough side story related to the plot to justify Tsukasa not running away with Isla.

After watching some shonen-action anime for quite sometime now, I just realized I do like the Romance genre most. And if you do too or even if you're not, Plastic Memories is still a must watch.
It's well directed, perfectly balanced drama and romantic sides make it such a good anime.

Comments are very much appreciated :)

Goodbye, Isla, and I hope one day you'll be reunited with Tsukasa :)
