To Love Ru Darkness 1st Season Outline:
If you read the first review on To Love Ru and Motto To Love Ru, I said the anime doesn't have a significantly great story and is very heavy on the ecchi (almost to the point it's called light porn), but the comedy is still a worthwhile watch if you have the time. It's the same deal on Darkness but now the plot has a general direction for the whole series and we get to know more about the more popular characters Momo and Yami.

Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace 2 - Episode Impression
Here is the promised Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace Review! First things first, if you CANNOT STAND GORE then this isn't an anime you'd enjoy watching. The image you're seeing above is the very first scene of Ranpo Kitan after the OP song, and it's already clear that this anime isn't for younger audiences (and they say anime is for kids hue).
Now this next picture is an image of our main character: Kobayashi. 2 THINGS:
- Yes, He's cute
- Yes, He's a HE
Without showing any signs of pressure / terror (but actually exuding emotions of enjoyment and enthusiasm) he asks Akechi, the lead detective of the case (and also a High School Boy), to hire him as an assistant and he'll help in finding the killer. Akechi proposes a game; if Kobayashi can find the killer and prove his innocence, he'll hire him; and so the game of laplace begins.
So why watch Ranpo Kitan: Games of Laplace ?
- Mystery, Murder Cases, Detectives
1. It brings out the audience's wannabe Detective / Investigator Side. (Everyone has dreamed to be one / Since Blues Clues you were already a detective)
2. It appeals to a person's Sense of Justice (Yes, everyone wants to watch evil people get punished for their wrongdoings)
3. A Mystery / Case being solved gives the Audience a feeling of satisfaction or even shock if the solution wasn't what he/she expected. (In short, Mystery is Very Entertaining and Satisfying)
And that's why anime with the mystery genre come out to be so good too (Another, Kamisama no Memochou, Hyouka, GoSick, Conan to name some).
A sample of the gore you'll encounter from the first episode! |
- 'Genius Detective' Character
To prove my people are hooked to geniuses theory, check if you like some of these ones:
-Shinya Kogami (Psycho Pass)
-Keima Katsuragi (The World God Only Knows)
-L and Light Yagami (Death Note)
-Oreki Houtaro (Hyouka)
-Lelouch (Code Geass)
-Sora and Shiro (No Game No Life)
-Izaya (Durarara)
-Victorique (Gosick)
-Shinichi Kudo (Conan)
And a whole crapload of other characters @_@ there are so much! Anyway, give Ranpo Kitan a watch, I'm sure you'll like it :)

To Love-Ru / Motto To Love-Ru REVIEW
With the second season of To Love-Ru Darkness (the 4th installment) airing, I'll be making a review on the first two seasons of THE MOST FAMOUS HAREM ECCHI (debatable) series for the past half-decade. To Love-Ru is a homophone (words that sound alike) of the Japanese pronunciation "toraburu" which literally means "trouble." So let's get on it shall we?
Synopsis: Yuuki Rito is a goody two-shoes high school boy whose only problem is his sheepishness towards girls and especially the one he likes, Sairenji Haruna. One night in the bathtub (while pondering over how to confess) a naked girl crash lands through the roof and into the tub with him. Her name is Lala, the princess and heir to the throne of planet Deviluke, rulers of the universe. Little did he know that he is in for the ride of his life.
Despite what it looks like at first, To Love-Ru has minimal elements of Romance, and is purely Ecchi Comedy. Every episode except the last were fillers and stand-alone stories that only develop small parts of the characters' personalities (mostly feelings for the main character, Rito). There's no big plot (not PLOT, genuine plot) that covers the series (unless you consider Rito's Harem building up one) and if you're looking for an anime with a serious story or a real Romance series I advise you check my other reviews, because this isn't one.
But if YOU DO LIKE COMEDY fillers or have some free time to spare watching Ecchi Comedy, To Love-Ru is perfect.
The main character, Yuuki Rito, is a good-morals guy from head-to-toe: he's nice to everyone (which is what they like about him) but he always, ALWAYS accidentally gets into Ecchi situations (gets his face in someone's pantsu, his hand accidentally grabs boobs, he walks into girls dressing up or bathing, he battles an octopus tentacle-ing the characters) you name it, he's done it (not willingly though). It's a running gag in the show (yep if you're wearing a skirt there is NO WAY he's NOT gonna get under it accidentally) and it actually makes you laugh or want to facepalm (or both) depending on your type of humor. Oh, did I mention he turns beet red/faints whenever he gets in an ecchi situation? He's just a regular boy who doesn't want to get tangled up in a harem, but when it comes to facing a problem that involves the characters, he's ready to stand up do what's right (making the gurls fall hard).
There are two main heroines, so we'll start with the princess of another planet: Lala Satalin Deviluke. Lala is esentially the center of the show, as it's always her alien high tech inventions plus her upbeat, optimistic, energetic personality that gets Rito into trouble. She loves Rito (duh harem) and wants to marry her so she can stay on Earth and while Rito the new heir of the Deviluke throne, Rulers of the Universe. Of course, it's too much for Rito but he slowly develops her feelings for Lala. The other main heroine is Sairenji Haruna, an osanajijimi (childhood friend) who's really really really nice, shy, and has also liked Rito for years but none of them had the confidence to confess. Haruna's simply a girl that confuses Rito and the only reason she's even in the series is to keep Rito from devoting himself to Lala, thus allowing the series to pan out 4 seasons without Rito ending up with either of them.
Together all three of them get in ecchi-comedy situations for 25 episodes, and the only part with a deciding storyline is the 26th. Overall, the art is good, the OP and ED songs were wonderful, characters are stereotypical, but the ecchi comedy can be funny depending on your taste. What bothers me is the dragged out season; the anime was 26 episodes, and since it was a 22 minute long stand-alone, there were times where I just got bored. Good thing they fixed this in the next season, Motto To Love-Ru.
Art was also cleaned up (personally I didn't like the eyes at first, it looked kind of dead to me), the anime was also went deeper into the ecchi genre (lighter censors, more service kind of thing), and OP and ED music fantastic as ever. If you liked To Love-Ru, there's no doubt you'll like the second season too (no pun intended).
That's all, I'll be doing a review on Darkness and Darkness 2nd Season when I finish them. Also, I like the debate about the anime being borderline hentai; true, the ecchi scenes are too revealing and that is perhaps the closest you get to h-scenes, but the anime's focus IS comedy and fanservice, not !sex. Comment below and I'll read/ reply to your thoughts on the topic =))

Aoharu x Kikanjuu : First Impressions Review
- Shoujo Action? Shoujo Action!
We start off with the anime's main character, Tachibana Hotaru! The Student Council President of her unnamed High School, she possesses a strong sense of justice and high athleticism. She's also stubborn, strong willed, prideful, and protective of her friends. She's boyish, and she dresses like one too so people usually think she's male. I love how the anime features a shoujo who is a fighting prodigy, and pits her against an engaging sport like Survival Games (BB Gun Games). It's basically a Sports anime (a shooting survival game sport at that) with a shoujo twist.
- Action, Art, Sound Effects On Point.
- Guns, Bullets, Team Death Matches~
- Don't forget the Comedy
Overall, Aoharu x Kikanjuu is looking solid, steady-paced (more action to come in the following episodes) and really entertaining as well. Episode 5 would be coming out in half a week! You could catch up or binge watch if you haven't watched it yet =)) Comments appreciated.
P.S. In 1 week I change the blog's URL to LolzNeko.blogspot.com
Notice: Upcoming Blog Title & URL Change
First of all, I apologize for not posting this July 27! I've been enjoying the final week before school starts (university life) and sometimes I don't get to post. I know it's important for a blogger to post consistently, so I'll still be posting daily or at least twice every 3 days. Anyways, on to the actual topic:
The blog name "The Ice Key Anime" isn't just sticking to me; I mean, it isn't related to me at the least, it's just a homophone of Daisuki Anime, and I want to think of something original and memorable to me and to my readers (though few). I think I'll be changing it to LolzNeko's Blog or LolzNeko's Anime Reviews in about a week or so.
Why? 'LolzCatz' was my summoner name in League of Legends and has been my in game name for a lot of games I've played. Adapting the 'cat' to japanese (Neko; so atleast it's slightly related to Otaku culture) I get the name LolzNeko. I'll be working hard to promote the blog under this name/brand/mark, and I hope everyone likes it. I'll be changing the header to Lolzneko's Anime Reviews so people would get used to it, and then after a week or so change the url to lolzneko.blogspot.com.
Thank you for taking time to read this! Will be posting some reviews on upcoming anime soon!

Kamisama no Memochou : Review
I've been thinking about making a page for my personal favorites, and Kamisama no Memochou (Heaven's Memo Pad) is definitely going in there. First of all, I apologize for not posting yesterday (I was kind of in an area without internet) and to make up for that I'm posting a review of one of my favorites <3
Synopsis: Narumi Fujishima isn't your typical high school student. He's never really fit in and has become increasingly more isolated from his fellow classmates. But he's not alone, and when Ayaka, the sole member of the Gardening Club, introduces him to the reclusive girl who lives above the ramen shop, Narumi enters a whole new secret world. Alice is a NEET, someone who is Not Employed, being Educated or in Training, but as Narumi quickly discovers, that doesn't mean that she does nothing all day.
In between tending to her small army of stuffed bears, Alice is an expert hacker and a very exclusive private detective. To his surprise, Narumi finds himself drafted as one of the strange-but-elite team of associates that Alice has assembled from her NEET acquaintances. Together they'll battle gangs, thieves, murderers, and drug lords. And in the middle of it all, Narumi will find his life changing forever! (Source: Sentai Filmworks)
So what makes Kamisama no Memochou a personal favorite?
- Modern Mystery: Detectives, Speakers of the Dead
- Alice, NEET Moe Detective
- Light Novel-ish Perspective
Overall, Kamisama no Memochou was as an astounding watch, and has quickly established a spot in my personal favorites. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy the mystery genre and can handle some dark side of humanity --- and I guarantee you'll enjoy it as well.

Overlord : First Look
Now we have our first impressions of Overlord! Before we start, I'd like to thank @AnimeRetweet for retweeting one of my post links (the one about Seinen Anime) on twitter --- it has now become my most viewed post here on this blog. Anyway, on to the Review then?
Synopsis: Momonga, a man playing in a DMMORPG (Dive Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) called Yggdrasil decides to enjoy his final moments in the game before its server officially shuts down. To his surprise however, he continues to live in the game (past the server shut down schedule) and he can't log out. The NPCs under his guild surprisingly developed personalities and their own will, and they are all under his command. He then decides to continue to live in the game and takeover the world he currently resides in.
Now, why watch Overlord?
- A fresh new take on the MMORPG genre
- Not Human!
Overall:
Sadly that's all I got from the first three episodes: the anime is kind of slow-paced as of the moment, and there are some content I didn't like. There were scenes that seem unnecessarily gory (they could tone down the blood a bit pls) and the main character isn't that interesting for me (he kind of lacks bravado), he seems so plain. But it's only been the beginning for the anime and it has a still has a lot of room for surprises. Maybe you could watch it and comment your thoughts / impressions below? I'll be waiting :)

Seinen Manga/Anime: Is it good?
Recently, a friend asked me if School Days was any good ( I immediately thought 'yeah, if you wanted to punch your screen or rage at characters') and what surprised me was, I didn't think it was particularly bad (hate me, but think about it). I immediately researched it and discovered it was under a certain 'type/genre', called Seinen.
What is Seinen?
The Seinen tag describes those anime/ manga who have scenes not appropriate for younger viewers such as some mild sexual content, strong profanity, or extreme violence. Basically, Seinen manga/anime is literary work intended for mature viewers. So rounding it up:
I'm not 18 yet :O can I watch this?
Of course, even if you're not old enough you can watch/read Seinen works as long as you keep a mature outlook and try to understand what the anime is conveying. Meaning don't whine like a baby after seeing gory scenes / sexual content and try to find the deeper meaning behind those scenes.
Wow, Seinen Anime looks promising. Any examples I could watch?
You might have not noticed it but a lot of good animes are actually Seinen. Some of these are

- Death Note
- Psycho Pass
- Durarara!
- Baccano
- Steins; Gate
- Shingeki no Kyojin
- Hellsing
- Elfen Lied
- Etc, etc
leading us to our initial, and final question:
Is Seinen Anime any good?
YES! Seinen Anime usually hold very deep messages behind their complex stories, and is definitely worth watching. They say anime is for kids? Clearly they haven't seen any Seinen anime.
Bonus Question: Is School Days any good?
This was where it all started so I guess I have to answer it: Yes, personally I think School Days is actually not that bad for an anime, People might rage over the needless sex / gore, BUT it WAS NEEDED: like I said every part of the plot holds a deep meaning and an overall message to the viewers.
In this case School Days message is telling us: Don't f*ck up your teenage life. Make responsible decisions. Sorry for the use of the cuss word, but I do believe it was appropriate.
Any comments are appreciated!
Dere Directory: A Comprehensive Guide to -Dere Archetypes
I just decided I should do other posts besides reviews since I'm lacking content on my blog, and I came up with creating a Dere Directory! Scouring the Internet for different types of our lovable anime stereotypes, I found 9 main -dere personalities so let's take our time and examine each.
1) Tsundere
Starting off our list is the Tsundere, probably the most famous and well known stereotype in the anime industry! The word tsundere is derived from the onomatopoeic terms tsuntsun (meaning cold, blunt, rash, violent, tough, hostile, etc.) and deredere (meaning sweet, gentle, lovestruck) to form a word describing a person who maybe 'tsun' at first, but has a sweet, loving side.
Tsunderes, once in love, are famous for their characteristics such as:
- saying "It's not like I'm doing this because I like you or anything" or something similar
- calling their love interest an idiot (repeatedly) or claiming to hate them (yeah right)
- blushing while muttering a weak "arigatou" which the lead char. won't probably hear
- forces herself to hate/be disgusted at the lead char. but actually experiences love
Basically, a character who denies her love for someone and acts tough/hostile outside towards that person, while actually caring/liking him inside. I just read something interesting in a reddit thread, in where there are two types of tsunderes:
Classic Tsundere - tsun at the start while gradually warming up to the person she likes as her character develops to a more 'dere' one (mainly found in the romance genre)
Modern Tsundere - switches from tsun to dere or back spontaneously and dramatically (mainly found in the comedy / harem genre)
2) Kuudere
Next up is the Kuudere, from the terms "Kuu" (cool, calm, collected) and deredere. Almost a complete opposite of the Tsundere. Kuuderes are slowly rising in terms of popularity because of their unemotional, almost innocent personalities that develop into something cute and 'dere' when the person they love comes along. They usually have a lot of self-control, speak in a monotone voice, and may seem emotionless but acts of kindness actually get to them and they may just fall for a person who treats them with such.
Kuuderes are almost taking over the romance genre: A bishoujo playing cool and unemotional shows a unique, supper cute appeal to the viewers when they finally break out of their comfort zone and display their emotions. Being unemotional / innocent most of the time, if a kuudere lets as much as a slight blush cover their face or a single squeal get out, the audience swoons; and watching a kuudere lose her composure and try to let her emotions be felt by the one she loves is never boring.
3) Dandere
Danderes are almost too similar to Kuuderes but have one other defining characteristic: being antisocial. "Dan" comes from the word 'Danmari' meaning "silent" making Danderes characters who rarely communicate with others. Their being anti-social may be caused by reasons like being too shy, too scared, too awkward, put into an isolated environment, or even maybe having a condition/disability. These make them characters who don't usually keep company and prefer to be by themselves.
The Dandere-type doesn't seem as popular because of its absurd similarity to the kuudere and its tendency to be erased when a lead character becomes friends with them (causing them to develop their character and overcome their anti-social nature).
Personally I only know a few examples who may fit in this category: the most popular being Nagato Yuki (Haruhi Suzumiya series), and arguably Misaki Mei (Another), Hyuuga Hinata (Naruto), Shiina Mashiro (Sakurasou), and Shiraishi Urara (Yamada-kun) solely for being antisocial at the beginning of their respective animes.
4) Yandere
Once in a while, a very rare kind of -dere appears... and it's the Yandere! Why so rare, you ask? Yandere is derived from terms Yanderu (to be sick) and deredere, meaning an unhealty infatuation or devotion that can often be destructive. Yanderes have tendencies to hurt others who might hinder her relationship with a love interest, and may even hurt the person she loves if he doesn't love her back/ interacts with other potential lovers.
Among the different types Yandere is definitely the most unique, and rarely has connections to other dere archetypes simply because of its dark concept (obsession) which leads to people involving the yandere's loved one getting hurt. Although Yanderes prove very hostile to most people, they display a loving 'dere' personality to the person they like, and seem normal when interacting with this person.
Famous examples would be Gasai Yuno (Mirai Nikki) who would kill for Yuki, and Senjougahara (Monogatari Series) who would either hurt or hurt for Araragi. Other examples would be Kotonoha and Sekai from School Days.
5) DereDere
Deredere must definitely be THE most boring -dere archetype. Derederes have only one side to them, which is being sweet, loving, caring, generally being 'dere' to everyone. Usually only included in comedy animes as side characters, possibly a younger sister archetype. I did label derederes as 'boring' since it offers almost no character development (which is what I look for) they can still be cute and charming, and can hold their own against the other archetypes. I a popular Deredere would be Nagisa (Clannad) who played a dramatic role (hehe) despite not having a side personality.
6) Himedere / Kamidere
I guess I should note this -dere type as it is appearing in a lot more shows lately. Hime means "princess" and Kami means "god", meaning these archetypes refer to characters who think they are of higher standing than common people, (thus referring to themselves as royalty or gods/goddesses) but actually have a dere side to them. Ojou-samas would be classified here as well (rich girls who think they're a class above others). These deres usually have a tsuntsun side with them, and may be considered a subtype of the tsundere.
7) Others

7) Others
- Mayadere - start off as an enemy but switches sides when she falls in love
- Bakadere - ditzy, clumsy, airhead, but deredere of course
- Tsunshun - a tsuntsun who gets depressed after insulting someone
- Yangire - someone who would kill for friends and family rather than love/romance
- Undere - always agrees / says yes / approves to gain favor
If you have anything to add, comment below ^_^ I hope the list helps!

Charlotte: First Look
Here we have our first view on Charlotte! Brought to us by PA Works (same studio who brought us Angel Beats, Another, Glasslip, NagiAsu) Charlotte breeds a lot of high expectations from its viewers.
I'll be doing this review based on the first three episodes, so enjoy!
Synopsis: Yuu Otosaka, having discovered his ability to possess people for 5 seconds, uses it for misdeeds to bolster his social standing. Not long after being admitted to a prestigious high school (after cheating ofc) students from another high school having abilities just like him put a stop to his wrongdoings, and asks him to transfer over and help them save other adolescents from misusing their powers.
- PA Works and Key
- School Life + Powers + Adolescence
characters is a trait of a work of high caliber.
- Strong-Spirited, Dynamic Leader Heroine!
- Music! Bands!
Overall, Charlotte may be one of the best animes to be released this season. Some say it might even surpass Angel Beats; everyone sure has high hopes for this anime, and I don't think it will disappoint.
Comments are very much appreciated!
